Porting moves your existing phone number from your current phone company to Ringhum, so your assistant answers it directly. Your callers keep dialling the same number, and it keeps working with your current phone company until the switch. You fill in a short form in the dashboard, and we file the move with the phone companies for you.

Who can port a number

Porting is part of the Scale plan, and needs an active paid plan. On other plans the Move my number button is locked. There you can buy a new number, or keep your number and forward it to Ringhum instead. See Forward your existing number to Ringhum.

You also need permission to manage numbers (workspace owners and admins). A number being moved counts towards your plan's phone number limit from the moment it is filed.

Before you start

Have a recent phone bill from your current phone company at hand. The details you enter must match the account exactly, or the phone company rejects the move. You need:

  • the name of the account holder (a person or business, as on the bill),
  • the first and last name of the person signing the authorization letter,
  • the account number,
  • the PIN or passcode, if your phone company gave you one (mobile companies usually require a port-out PIN),
  • the billing telephone number, which is the main number on the account and often the same number,
  • the service address on the account.

Important: Do not cancel your service with the current phone company yourself. The move cancels it for you. Cancelling early can make the number impossible to move.

Start the move

  1. Open Phone numbers and press Move my number.
  2. Under Number to move, enter the number in international format, starting with +, and press Check number.
  3. Read the result. It says whether the number can be moved, its type, what it will cost, and whether it is eligible for fast porting. Press Continue.
  4. Under Account with your current carrier, fill in the details exactly as they appear on your phone bill, then press Save details.
  5. Under What the carrier needs, provide everything marked Needed. For the authorization letter, press Download letter (PDF). It is filled in with your details. Sign it and upload it. Files can be PDF, JPG or PNG, up to 10 MB.
  6. Under When it arrives, pick a Switch date or leave As soon as possible, and choose the Assistant that should answer the number. You can also choose later.
  7. Tick the box to confirm that you are authorised to move the number, then press Send to the carrier.

You see "Port filed. We will email you as it progresses; most take 5–10 business days." Until you send it, a started request stays as Not sent yet, and you can come back and finish it.

Note: Files go straight to the phone company for review. We do not keep them.

How long it takes

Most moves take 5–10 business days. Numbers outside the US can take longer. Numbers marked Eligible for fast porting usually take a few business days. The number keeps working with your current phone company until the switch.

Follow the progress

Your request appears on the Phone numbers page with its status. We email you whenever the status changes, and you can press Refresh status to check at any time.

Status What it means
Draft Started but not sent yet
With the carrier Filed and being processed
Action needed The phone company needs changes. Press Fix and resend
Port date confirmed The switch date is set
Cancelling Your withdrawal was sent to the phone company
Completed The number has moved and answers calls
Cancelled The request was withdrawn

When the move completes, the number appears in your list and the assistant you chose answers it right away.

What it costs

The check shows the price before you commit:

  • If a free number slot is left on your plan, the number is included with your plan and costs nothing extra.
  • Otherwise it has a one-off setup charge and a monthly price, paid from your prepaid credit balance once the number arrives.

Nothing is charged if the move does not go through. When you send the request, we check that your credit balance (or your subscription) can cover the cost. If not, you are asked to add credit under Billing first. See Prepaid credit.

Withdraw a request

While a request is in progress, press Withdraw request and confirm. A request not sent yet is withdrawn at once. Otherwise the cancellation is sent to the phone company.

Troubleshooting

"The carrier needs changes." Usually a detail does not match the phone bill, or a document was not accepted. Correct the details or upload new files, then press Send again.

"This number cannot be moved." The phone company does not allow this number to be moved. The message includes the reason. You can still forward it to Ringhum.

"We cannot take numbers from that country yet." or "We cannot take this kind of number yet." We can only move numbers in countries and of types we support. Forwarding works for any number.

"That number is already being moved." or "That number is already on Ringhum." Another request for this number is open, or the number is already in a workspace.

"Your plan includes … phone number(s). Upgrade to add more." Numbers being moved count towards your limit. Delete a number you no longer need, or add numbers to your Scale plan.
